What baby safe haven laws reveal about reproductive justice

In Fighting Mad: Resisting the End of Roe v. Wade (UC Press, 2024), UCSB professor Laury Oaks examines how baby safe haven laws — originally framed as a response to infant abandonment—are now being used to justify restrictions on reproductive choice. “These laws were not originally proposed to replace abortion access,” she said, “yet, they are now being used explicitly as a rationale to eliminate reproductive choice.”
